SLCU meets Hon. Eddie Turay in Wageningen

By Abubakarr
Place: Tilburg
Date: 23/08/08

On 18th August, 2008 the SLCU was invited by the APC-Holland Chapter to meet with the Honorable and speaker of parliament Mr. Eddie Turay in Wagningen. During this visit, a brief background presentation of the SLCU, its achievements, plans and challenges in the coming years was presented to the Honourable Speaker.

One of the challenges facing the SLCU according to the secretary general is the refugee situation of Sierra Leones in Holland. Since the endorsement of the general pardon by the Dutch Parliament a year ago, many Sierra Leoneans have been able to secure their refugee status, granting them stay and working opportunities in the Netherlands after several years of uncertainty. But the adoption of the law means also that, those outside the general pardon, are now facing tougher asylum investigation and to some extent been captured and imprisoned when out of procedure. In Tilburg alone, two of our union active members have been arrested and detained almost five months ago. Their fate remains a mystery and the possibility of their release yet unknown. This has been a very frustrating episode for both the victim, their friends and loved ones here and at home

In his remarks, the Honourable Speaker expressed his appreciation for what the SLCU is doing. He promised calling on the minister of foreign affairs to answer questions about the refugee situation in parliament. The SLCU would receive feedback through the APC -chapter in Holland.
